The Oeko-Tex Standard 100 has been developed by a European group
of textile institutes as a testing program to screen for the presence of
certain hazardous elements and compounds within consumer textiles.
Textile products are the result of a complex series of
manufacturing processes, in the course of which an extremely diverse range of
chemicals may be used. Oeko-Tex Standard 100 specifies the allowable levels in
textiles of defined substances, known to be a health risk to humans. The test
cover: acidity/alkalinity (pH level), pesticides, dyestuffs (banned azo dyes,
allergenic dyes), formaldehyde, chlorinated phenols (e.g. pentachlorophenol),
phthalates, biocides, flame retardants, extractable heavy metals, di-butyl and
tri-butyl tin (DBT & TBT), dye-carriers (chloro-organic compounds),
volatile compounds (e.g. solvents), loose dye/colour, odours.
Coats Phong Phu obtains Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certificate in the
Product classes I & II (for babies and adult use) in all dyed sewing and
embroidery threads for the apparel, footwear and related industries, which was
awarded by BTTG on August 20th 1998 (BTTG is the United Kingdom’s exclusive
certifying body and has enjoyed working with a range of international market
leaders on this human ecology label since joining the Oeko-Tex Association in
1994).
The Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certification ensures CPP’s products
meet the human-ecological requirements of the current standard
for yarns and fibres for adult and baby use. The mark “Confidence in
Textile-Tested for harmful substances according to Oeko-Tex Standard 100” is
not a quality label, it relates only to the as-produced-state of the textile.
